"All About Repositories" series
Don't miss the Fall 2009 "All About Repositories" series featuring technology solutions from the industry leaders: DuraSpace, SPARC, and Sun Microsystems. These highly successful webinars are designed to provide overviews of best practices, technology updates, and key trend analyses for academic resources directors, IT managers, digital librarians, repository managers and developers, and curators.
To date over 1500 attendees have participated in the previous webinars and a number have become members of DuraSpace, SPARC, and the related Sun Preservation and Archiving Special Interest Group (www.sun-pasig.ning.com) to gain deeper understanding and involvement in repository topics.
The IA Web Archive and Sun's Modular Data Repository: A Grand Experiment in Production
Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Time: 10:00 am PT
The Internet Archive is a non-profit organization that is compiling a historic database of Web sites and other digital content. IA's web archives now exceed 2PBs of data (compressed) and encompass over 150 billion captures collected from 1996 to the present culled from every domain, over 200 million web sites and 40+ languages. This archival database expands with the Internet, and so grows by over 100TBs (compressed) every month. Usage of IA's web collections via the Wayback machine average 400-500 requests per second.
Recently, the Internet Archive invested in Sun's open storage server and software technologies, specifically a Sun Modular Data center (Sun MD), installed at Sun's Santa Clara campus, supported by the Sun MD remote monitoring service. This new Sun MD was installed in March 2009. It is equipped with Sun Fire X4500 (Thumper) Open Storage Systems that run the Solaris 10 OS, including the Solaris ZFS file system. Sun's servers with Solaris ZFS storage pools enabled the Internet Archive to double the storage capacity of its old system while using up to 50 percent less power than other servers would use.
During this webinar, Kris Carpenter Negulescu, Director Web Group, will share with us, the vision behind this initiative, the initial effort, where technology seems to be headed in general and what it means for the future of Internet Archive’s digital web repositories.
Kris leads a team responsible for:
- Cultivating IA's web collections and providing access to researchers and the public
- Developing the Heritrix open source web crawler and Wayback machine as well as other tools used to search, mine & replay archived web content
- Providing expertise and services in web archiving, data mining and access to national and state libraries & archives, universities, museums and many other memory institutions around the globe.
- Collaborating with memory institutions from around the globe to promote web publishing, harvesting, and preservation best practices
Kris represents IA on the International Internet Preservation Consortium steering committee and access working group. Prior to joining the Archive, Kris led teams that delivered web search, ecommerce marketplace and transactional services, primarily for venture-backed Silicon Valley start-ups. Kris received a B. A. and an M. A. from Stanford University.
